Obituary

Dr. Roy G. Cooksey, Jr., 88, of Bowling Green, died Sunday, August 14, 2016, at the Hospice House of Southern Kentucky in Bowling Green. He was the son of the late Roy Goode Cooksey, Sr. and Lillie Haley Cooksey. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Martha Haley Cooksey Deemer.
The Warren County native graduated from College High and Western Kentucky University. He graduated from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine in 1953 and interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He served in the Air Force as a flight surgeon on the Arctic DEW Line and on Okinawa and Japan. He completed a five-year surgical residency at Cook County Hospital and a residency in colon and rectal surgery at Ferguson Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Cooksey lived an interesting and active life and was dedicated to his patients both as a surgeon and friend. Rounding out this wonderful life was his avocation as a local farmer which added to his love of nature, animals, hunting and a rich relationship with the land.
Survivors include two nephews, Paul C. Deemer, III, of London, England, and Roy C. Deemer, Louisville, KY; a niece, Ellen Deemer Buchanon, Bowling Green; long-time family friend, Atha Wright Ford, Bowling Green, and her children, Katherine and Jess; 8 great nieces and nephews, Pete Deemer, Andrew Deemer, Aaron Deemer, Renee Deemer, Harrison Deemer, John Deemer, Michael Buchanon and Roy Buchanon; and several great great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 17, from 4:30 to 7:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling Green. Cremation was chosen and there will be a private family graveside service at another time.
