Obituary

David Ray Browning , 77, a long time resident of Bowling Green, passed away on October 6, 2017. He was born August 31, 1940 and was the son of Melvin Clay Browning and Mary Alice Blackwell Cook. He was a proud Palm Beach (FL) High School alumni. He attended the University of Kentucky where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. David
graduated from Western Kentucky University, where he was recognized for his 50 year philanthropic dedication to the Hilltoppers. As a business leader in the community, he was
President and owner of Browning Oil Company for 40+ years, held a tenured membership in the National Petroleum Marketers Association, was a past president of the Kentucky Petroleum Marketers Association and he was awarded the Shell Oil Corporation’s Circle of Success for many years. Notably David was responsible for bringing the concept of the self-service gasoline station to the Bowling Green market. David was a devoted husband, father, uncle and grandfather to his large extended family. He never met a stranger, loved a good joke and always enjoyed two scoops of chocolate ice cream. He will be dearly missed. David is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Dolly” Potts Browning, his two daughters, Elizabeth (Betsy) Browning Giles (Tracy) of Lexington, KY, Sara Paige Browning of Nashville, TN, three stepchildren, Anne Leachman Burkin (Stuart) of Malibu, CA, John Powell Leachman (Brooke) of Philadelphia, PA and David Cayton Leachman (Mackenzie) of Lexington, KY, his nephews William Griffin (Mary Ann) of Danville, KY and Tom Griffin ( Debbie) of Bowling Green, KY, and his niece, Kelly Griffin Sauerwein of Wimberley, Texas. He was a devoted PawPaw to all of his wonderful grandchildren: Clay, Lily and Christina Giles, Eva and Ben Burkin, Henry Leachman, Charlie and Leah Leachman. He was predeceased in death by his sister, Joann Browning Robinson, his great nephew, Justin Tyler Griffin and Elizabeth (Betty) Pope Browning. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 10, 2017 @ 10:00 a.m. at the J. C. Kirby & Sons, Lovers Lane Chapel. Visitation will be Monday, October 9, 2017 from 5-8 PM at the same location. A private burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery following the services on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests expressions of sympathy be made to the American Diabetes Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
