In 1947, J.C. Kirby was a soda jerk at Pearson’s Drug Store
and a tenant farmer in the Alvaton community of south Warren
County. While he was proud of his farming roots, J.C. knew
there was more he wanted to do with his life. After being urged
and encouraged by many friends, he decided upon a career in
the funeral business. Mr. Lewie T. Satterfield, part owner of the
Satterfield-Akin & Dawson Funeral Home, hired the scrappy,
curly-headed young man and started to train him in the
funeral trade.

In 1949, J.C. graduated from the Kentucky School of Mortuary
Science and returned to Bowling Green where he worked for
Lewie Satterfield and Aubrey Johnson. At that time, the funeral
home was known as the Satterfield-Akin-Dawson & Johnson
Funeral Home. As time went by, Aubrey Johnson ended up
with full ownership of the funeral home.
